Rishabh Pant has hinted towards a potential rift with Delhi Capitals’ (DC) management before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. According to reports, DC opted to go with Pant as their captain because he requested such a large sum as his retention price. However, the wicketkeeper batsman has clarified the situation.

Rishabh Pant claims release from DC “wasn’t about money”

DC overhaul before IPL 2025

For those who don't know, DC made significant adjustments prior to the 18th IPL season. The franchise's two co-owners, JSW and GMR Group, have agreed that JSW will manage the women's squad in the Women's Premier League (WPL) and GMR will manage the men's team through the 2026 season.

Hemang Badani succeeded Ricky Ponting, who led them from 2018 to 2024, and Venugopal Rao succeeded Sourav Ganguly as DC's Director of Cricket. Ganguly, who may be seen in the WPL, will now serve as the Director of Cricket for JSW Sports.

Pant vs GMR?

But letting Pant go was the most significant adjustment. The wicketkeeper's assertion that "my retention wasn't about the money for sure that I can say" is odd. Did DC decide to clean the house because they wanted to start over? Or is Pant causing them additional problems? Pant asked his supporters what he would bid at the IPL 2025 super auction in a midnight post, which reportedly displeased them. We are left with no choice but to speculate until DC or Pant explicitly state what transpired.
