Marcus Stoinis Shines Ahead of IPL 2025 Auction, Leaving LSG Regretting Their Decision.
The
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had to reconsider their decision to release Marcus
Stoinis after he gave a faultless tryout for the IPL 2025 big auction, proving
his worth. In the third ODI against Pakistan, the Australian all-rounder
completed a string of outstanding performances by showcasing his devastating
form.
At Ninja Stadium, Stoinis
showed off his full talent after making a quick but significant appearance in
the opening game of the series (21 off 7 balls), hitting 61 off just 27
deliveries. With the IPL 2025 auction just a few days away, his explosive
innings—which included a half-century in just 23 balls—not only guaranteed
Australia a series thumping but also increased his auction stock. He chased a
modest goal of 118.
Why Did LSG Let Stoinis Go?
Stoinis
was not kept by the franchise even though he was one of LSG's best players.
With 952 runs, the all-rounder was their second-highest scorer since the team's
founding, only surpassed by captain KL Rahul. Stoinis, who is well-known for
his ability to finish in the middle order, also made a contribution with the
ball, taking 13 wickets and frequently managing difficult overs.
But LSG
chose to focus on youthful talent, keeping Mayank Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi for
₹11 crore apiece. Even though Stoinis had a great IPL 2024 season (388 runs at
an average of 32.33 and a strike rate of 147.52), he was left out despite
commanding a substantial salary of ₹9.6 crore. The choice was probably made
strategically because LSG might intend to repurchase him at the auction using a
Right to Match (RTM) card without going over their budget.
Marcus Stoinis’ record for LSG
Matches | Runs | Average | Strike Rate | 100s | 50s | Highest Score |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
40 | 952 | 28.84 | 148.51 | 1 | 5 | 124* |
A Costly Gamble?
Although
the goal of LSG's retention decisions was to maximize squad balance, Stoinis'
recent performances have surely called into question their approach. His
outstanding play guarantees that he will be among the most sought-after players
at the upcoming IPL 2025 auction, possibly fetching a price substantially
higher than LSG's original assessment.
His previous side may wish they had kept
their great all-rounder on the pitch as Stoinis continues to dominate. One of
the most fascinating stories of the impending auction is whether LSG can
successfully bring him back or watch him power another team.
